Ever heard of borborygmi?  It’s the big fancy word doctors sometimes use for stomach rumbling. Borborygmi can get so bad that it can be embarrassing. I’ll explain why it’s happening and what you can do about it.

We see (and hear) a lot of people with borborygmi. And the biggest complaint we get from patients is that when they are out with their friends or in public, the rumbling can be so loud that everyone else can hear it and that they are embarrassed by it. Has that happened to you?

Rumbling in the tummy isn’t always in the stomach. Often it is in the intestinal tract too. And sometimes is feels like something is moving around down there creating a ruckus. It’s not an alien. It’s your digestion gone rogue, and I’ll explain what I mean by that.

What Causes Borborygmi?

All of that stomach gurgling is the movement of the contents inside your gastrointestinal tract. Everyone’s moves and it’s called peristalsis.  A little bit of barely audible rumbling on occasion is perfectly normal. But people with really good digestion rarely have this, even when they are hungry.

When your GI tract is irritated and when that is combined with more gas than usual inside of your intestines, then you can get unusually loud sounds coming from down there.

This is caused by a variety of things that are causing you not to have great digestion, and those things can be anything from foods that are causing an inflammatory reaction, problems in your microbiome, issues with enzymes and acid production, and a lot of other things.

What all of these things have in common is that they ultimately lead to poor digestion, which leads to excess gas production and lots of rumbling and tumbling in your digestive tract as the contents move through your digestive system.

How To Treat Borborygmi

Most people try taking things like tums and other over the counter digestive aids. These don’t actually address the cause of your rumbling, but if you’re lucky they may help you some with your symptoms.

The key to solving all of this rumbling and tumbling is figuring out exactly what is causing it. You’d think that your gastroenterologist would be doing that, but they are mostly worried about ruling out bad things like cancer and ulcers. Once they’ve done that, they run out of tools for understanding exactly what is going on in there.

There are literally hundreds of things that can cause this, which is why you need a specialist to treat it. What we do is evaluate everything that is happening in our digestive system, including everything in your microbiome as well as your enzyme production, which is way easier said than done.

But once that is properly done by someone who knows how to treat borborygmi, then a truly meaningful treatment plan can be developed that actually works.  Don’t accept anything less. And you’ll know it worked, because all of that rumbling will be gone.
