Understanding the Treatment Link Between IBS with Heartburn or GERD

Many people who have IBS also suffer from heartburn or GERD. When that happens, the cause is often related and solving your IBS will often solve your heartburn or your GERD. I’ll explain how and why they are related, and what you can do about it.

We’ve treated over 10,000 cases of IBS, and a significant number of those people have also had heartburn or GERD.  And what we’ve noticed over the years is that is that not infrequently when we’ve helped people with their IBS, their heartburn or their GERD also improves.

Why does that happen? Well, both areas obviously involve the digestive tract, and both are symptoms of something else that is affecting the digestive system. And contrary to popular belief, heartburn and GERD are NOT caused by excess acid production in the stomach. They are caused by an irritated lining in the lower esophagus that is now susceptible to the acid that you’ve always produced.

Treating heartburn and GERD with things like Prilosec or Prevacid or Nexium or Tums is only shutting down or buffering your acid production. It isn’t addressing the cause of the irritation that led to your heartburn or your GERD. You might get some relief, but it’s temporary, and none of those products were designed to use long term.

When we help people with IBS, we are always working on helping them to find the CAUSE of their IBS.  Although there are many, many things that cause IBS, what they ALL do is create irritation in the digestive tract. And things that cause irritation in your lower digestive tract and lead to IBS, are often also causing irritation in your upper digestive system, leading to heartburn or GERD.

So if you’d like to get your IBS sorted out, and you also happen to have heartburn or GERD, you may very well get them both solved at the same time. And that’s what we help people do.
