The Side Effects of Linzess

Linzess is one of the most common medications for IBS C, otherwise known as constipation predominant IBS. Unfortunately, it USUALLY comes with side effects. I’ll explain what those are, and what you can do about it.

Believe it or not, we DO NOT PRESCRIBE LINZESS at the IBS Treatment Center. Why not?  Well, first of all, because it doesn’t cure anything, which is our goal for all of our patients, to help them cure their IBS.  And just as important, almost all of the people who come to us who’ve tried using Linzess tell us that it has caused them unbearable side effects.

(Please watch the video here to get the full context for the following information!)

Allow me to show you exactly what I’m talking about.  To do that, let’s go to my favorite website for discovering the possible side effects of a medication, drugs.com. When it comes to discovering the side effects of a medication, all websites are not created equal. In my experience, drugs, com is far more complete than other websites, and typically lists at least 4x the number of side effects that other websites list.

Here we are at Linzess, which is also known as Linaclotide.  Drugs.com will give you an idea about how common a side effect is. The most common side effect from Linzess that I’ve heard patients report is diarrhea and stomach pain. And usually it’s so bad that they stop taking the medication.

And here, in the Gastrointestinal side-effect section, you can see A LOT of people get diarrhea when they take Linzess. It’s literally around 50% of people who take the medication get diarrhea. That may be the most side effect I’ve ever seen from a medication.

Now I know what some of you are thinking. Some of you have constipation that is so bad that you would rather have diarrhea. I know this, because I’ve had many patients tell me that. Just like I’ve had many diarrhea patients tell me that they’d rather have constipation. The grass is always greener sort of thing.

But you might change your mind when you actually have the opposite problem, especially if it comes with a lot of abdominal or stomach pain, which is also relatively common on Linzess.

Not to mention that it can also cause headaches, gas, and even GI hemorrhaging. I’d say take your pick, constipation or these symptoms, but we believe that there is a better option.

Since 2005 we’ve worked with thousands of IBS patients via telemedicine to help them resolve their digestive problems, without the use of medications that only treat their symptoms. Our goal is to find the underlying cause of the problem, and to help you prevent IBS from happening at all.

So if you’ve got IBS, give us a call today at 206-264-1111.  Regardless of where you live, we can work with you.
