With 10-15 percent of the world’s population suffering from irritable bowel syndrome (IBS), it’s no wonder that Dr. Stephen Wangen is one of the most well-respected, sought-after physicians on the planet. The reigning authority on IBS, Wangen co-founded the first and only dedicated IBS Treatment Center in existence in 2005. (He also serves as the center’s medical director.)  Since then, the treatment center has expanded to include locations in Los Angeles, California as well as Seattle, Washington. The center also serves patients from over 30 countries through its telemedicine service.

A licensed and board-certified physician with a doctoral degree in naturopathic medicine and a bachelor’s degree in biology, Wangen is the author of the highly celebrated The Irritable Bowel Syndrome Solution (2005), the definitive resource on IBS.  He is also the author of the groundbreaking, best-selling Healthier without Wheat (2007), the ultimate resource for wheat allergies, celiac disease, and non-celiac gluten intolerance.

Suffering from IBS as a young man shaped Wangen’s lifelong determination to solve this complex digestive ailment and improve overall health. Having dedicated his life to curing this pervasive and systemic affliction, Dr. Wangen now oversees and personally selects other superlative doctors who practice this specialty at his clinics. As a result of his devotion to this discipline, he has successfully helped thousands of patients around the world to end their gastrointestinal problems.

After winning track and music scholarships, in addition to a President’s Scholarship, Wangen graduated cum laude from Pacific Lutheran University with a bachelor’s degree in biology.

From 1991 to 1995, Wangen worked for the U.S. Department of Energy’s Argonne National Laboratory and was part of an elite team that flew all over the world, from Alaska to the Azores, working on superfund sites and inspecting hazardous waste and hazardous material handling in federal facilities.

While at Bastyr University for medical school in the late 90s, he became known as the “celiac doctor” for his interest in gluten sensitivity and intolerance. In 1999, he graduated with a doctoral degree in naturopathic medicine. After completing his doctorate, he worked directly for the former president of the university developing an AI system to aggregate medical research.

A nationally recognized speaker, he has been interviewed on ABC, NBC, and Fox as well as public radio and television. He was recently named one of Seattle’s Top Doctors by Seattle Magazine.

One of the first doctors to recognize that both gluten intolerance and gluten sensitivity are vastly underestimated and underdiagnosed, Dr. Wangen has been completely gluten-free and dairy-free since the late 90s.
