Tenesmus is a $5 word for when you feel like you’ve got to go, but nothing comes out. Stay tuned and I’ll talk more about what tenesmus is, why it happens, and what you can do about it.
We’ve helped thousands of IBS patients since 2005, and many, many times I’ve had patients describe to me how tenesmus is a part of their IBS, and how they have the urge to have a bowel movement, but they don’t get any satisfaction from trying to go.
This means that either nothing comes out, or so little comes out that they have to repeat the process over and over again, often for hours, before they get any relief and feel like they can finally leave the house. And probably not surprisingly, tenesmus often includes straining, pain, and cramping, because that urge to go is essentially the bowel contracting.
Obviously, something is very wrong when this happens. And unfortunately, the typical medical system response is to prescribe an antispasmodic, such as dicyclomine. Also known as Bentyl.
If you are very lucky, that will give you some relief. But it certainly doesn’t address why you are having tenesmus in the first place. And it also isn’t going to cure your tenesmus. It’s merely a treatment for the symptom of tenesmus, not the cause of your suffering.
So what is causing tenesmus? I encourage you to look at tenesmus as a sign from your digestive system that it is very unhealthy, and it’s crying out for help. That may literally make you cry, so I know that it’s difficult to see it as a message, but that’s exactly what it is.
And there is a cause for this, but there is no simple easy answer. In my career I’ve seen hundreds of causes for tenesmus, and the key to getting rid it and helping you get your life back is helping you figure out what that cause is. And that’s why I created the IBS Treatment Center, because it hadn’t been done before, and we needed a place like this where people could get better.
We work with people all over the U.S and the world via telemedicine, and we’d love to work with you too to help you get your life back from IBS and tenesmus. So, give us a call at 206-264-1111 and get started right away.
