One of the more common complaints that we hear from our patients is that their IBS symptoms are keeping them up at night. This make your IBS become an even bigger problem, because now you aren’t getting enough sleep, and your energy and metal abilities will suffer as well. I’ll talk more about how IBS affects sleep and what you can do about it.
IBS includes if you have any of the chronic symptoms of abdominal pain or discomfort, diarrhea, constipation, gas, or bloating. And many of our IBS patients also experience heartburn or reflux, which can also affect your sleep.
When any of these happen at night, then can affect your sleep and prevent you from getting the rest that you need. This can happen in a variety of ways.
Patients have described the following sleep issues with regard to their IBS: not being able to get to sleep become of their discomfort, being woken up for hours at a time at night with pain or discomfort or having to rush to the bathroom, or having to get up extra early in order to go through an extended or multiple bowel movement routine so that they can safely leave the house.
Does any of that sound familiar? Then you know exactly what I’m talking about. And if any of that is happening to you, then you probably aren’t getting enough sleep, and you definitely aren’t getting high quality sleep. That can lead to a long and tiresome day, trouble thinking clearly, and maybe a cranky attitude.
And then you get home only to repeat the cycle. Now you not only have IBS, you have a bunch of other problems as well.
If any of this is happening to you, don’t put up with it any longer.
