Pseudomonas, particularly Pseudomonas aeruginosa, is a lesser-known bacterium that can cause significant issues in the digestive system. In this video, I'll explain what it is and what you need to know about it.
One of the many issues we encounter that can cause IBS symptoms such as abdominal pain, diarrhea, gas, or bloating is a bacterium called Pseudomonas.
Most stool tests don’t even check for Pseudomonas, so if you’ve never heard of it, you’re not alone. However, Pseudomonas is incredibly important and is one of the many possible bacterial overgrowths in the digestive system that can cause IBS.
Pseudomonas aeruginosa is particularly problematic because not only can it cause IBS, but it is also very difficult to treat due to both antibiotic resistance and the formation of biofilms.
Pseudomonas aeruginosa is resistant to many antibiotics. Even if it’s not resistant to the antibiotic you are taking, it is one of the more devious bacteria that often forms a biofilm, making it much more difficult to kill.
Biofilms, as I’ve mentioned in my other videos, are colonies of bacteria that form along the lining of the digestive tract, protecting themselves with walls they build around themselves. These walls are difficult for antibiotics to penetrate.
Pseudomonas is particularly adept at doing this, which is one reason you may be struggling to get better from your IBS. If you aren’t seeing any improvement, or if you are treating it but only getting temporary relief and it keeps coming back, then you need an IBS specialist who is familiar with this problem to help you finally get over the hump and achieve full resolution of your IBS.
At the IBS Treatment Center, we have seen many patients with Pseudomonas overgrowths in their digestive system that are responsible for their symptoms. These patients often require multiple treatments and need to be closely monitored and retested to stay on track in their treatment program and solve their IBS.
If you have a Pseudomonas overgrowth or suspect that you do, don’t hesitate to reach out to us to schedule an appointment. Since 2005, we’ve worked with thousands of people all over the U.S. and the world via telemedicine, and we’d love to work with you too.
